Hidden Moose of Wisconsin is an independent research and education organization dedicated to understanding moose in Wisconsin through long-term field research, data collection, and public engagement.
From trail cameras and field observations to community reports and habitat evidence, we are building a clearer picture of where moose are present, how they use the landscape, and what their presence means for Wisconsin.
A New Chapter for Wisconsin's Moose
For years, moose in Wisconsin existed in a space of uncertainty. Although sightings, photographs, and field evidence continued to accumulate, moose were not recognized as a resident species in the state.
Through years of accumulating observations, field evidence, and research from multiple sources, a clearer picture of Wisconsin’s moose began to emerge.
In 2026, Wisconsin’s Natural Heritage Inventory updated the state status of moose, recognizing them as a resident species while acknowledging that important questions remain about their rarity, population trends, genetics, and conservation significance.
The questions have changed.
The work continues.

Pancho is a one-antlered bull moose whose story spans years of observations, trail camera encounters, and field discoveries.
His unusual antler development helped researchers recognize that repeated reports of a "bull who dropped an antler early" were actually observations of the same individual.
Today, Pancho is one of the most documented individual moose in the Hidden Moose of Wisconsin study.
